Why Consultancy by Louise Trueman
Trueman Bailey law is the antidote, in my eyes, to the traditional, brain draining, routine of the 9-5 office life. Having started the business in 2025 having spent years in the humdrum day to day of conveyancing within a traditional firm - I can hands down (and I appreciate I would say this !!) but I would HANDS DOWN say that this business has changed my life - entirely. The scope of work I can take on is far exceeded than the expected levels of basic everyday conveyancing I was taking before. And please don’t misunderstand I LOVE that work too! It just doesn’t fuel the fire of change and growth and discipline of challenging yourself. In my opinion, for what it is worth, much of the depression, daily misery, lack of value, lack of importance, lack of ability - all stems from the lack of being able to challenge yourself and whilst I absolutely appreciate that it isn’t for everyone - we must be able to have the choice. And sometimes, I don’t want to challenge myself - sometimes I like the day to day routine and stability and structure - it’s important- it’s important for my mental wellbeing and the ability to feel calm and collected and like I know where I am! But it isn’t EVERYTHING and making the choice to be in consultancy means I have the chance to have both! And who doesn’t want the chance to have both. Being able to utilise my skills, try new things and return to the place of stability as and when I need it - has vastly improved mcy life and that is what I wanted when I left the traditional firms I was in - choice - onus - say over my own life, my own abilities, my own desire to learn to navigate change and look at new situations and new work and make a difference there too.
I want to be able to help and support people and in reality in the set up of a traditional firm I never had the chance to meet new people anymore, to explore what it was to invent the wheel, step outside of my comfort zone and stretch muscles I hadn’t used in a long time! As a 39 year old woman at the time - I had had enough of other people making decisions for me. I wanted to start to make decisions for myself. For my life, for my children, and their right to have a mother at home with them when they wanted, to collect them from school, to show up at meetings feeling calm and ready to take action on their behalf as and when they needed - not feeling wretched from sitting at a desk all day, guilt ridden at not being able to work and having the option to leave when I want, negotiate with colleagues (some of which without children and lacking empathy for those with!) And generally feeling pulled in so many directions it began to hurt!! A house full of dishes to clean, a home needing attention and change, and the inability to find the time to do it because I sat behind a desk exhausted and drained for hours on end without having the mental capacity to keep going for 8 hours when in reality as humans our brains are just not capable of that much concentration. I would piece together the day - don’t get me wrong - but at what cost??
The cost of boredom at the lack of change and the lack of pushing myself and the lack of onus to do something new. I didn’t leave sooner because of guilt at leaving people I felt responsible for (something I have had the ability to address within myself and work on as a result of my decisions to leave in the end !!). I stayed in environments for far too long which felt toxic, unpleasant, belittling and devaluing and because I wanted to please others mostly !! I wanted to make sure I fit the mould and did as I was told. I was afraid of losing the finances I have now - far beyond what I had then (!) I have earned far more in the last 6 months than I ever have in the traditional law firm set up, and more than that, I have evolved as a human being and found ways to function as both an ambitious woman, mother, business owner, home owner and all round functioning (most days!!) human being.
So, what would i say my number one take away is from working as a self employed woman with kids and whilst running a business outside of the 9-5 driven lifestyle which lacks ambition, thought, brains, the desire or need to think for oneself - I found myself. 100% and without question I found myself and I’m proud of the woman I became in finding the courage to explore new avenues - and they didn’t all work right away - but in finding what didn’t work right away - for the long term I found exactly what did !! And I’m super proud of this business and the ability to give women and men the right to work for themselves, think for themselves and believe in themselves to know they too can break the mould. We would love for you to join us on this journey!!
